“Nigeria drifting towards one-party state” — Governor Seyi Makinde raises concern over democracy
Nigeria drifting towards one-party state Governor Seyi Makinde raises concern over democracyGovernor Seyi Makinde has expressed concern over the state of Nigerias democracy, warning that the country may be gradually moving towards a one-party system. In a newsletter titled The business of governance, the Oyo State governor said recent political developments are raising serious questions about the future of democratic balance in the country. According to him, opposition voices are increasingly being threatened, while alternative political platforms are being weakened. Voices that speak up are being openly threatened. Opposition is being fragmented, constrained, or pushed to the margins, he said. Makinde noted that this situation is causing some Nigerians to withdraw from political conversations, feeling that their voices no longer matter. He stressed that a healthy democracy depends on strong opposition, credible alternatives, and public confidence in institutions. When opposition becomes ineffective, accountability weakens, he added. The governor also warned against public silence, saying indifference at this stage could lead to consequences that may be difficult to reverse later. I do not believe Nigeria has reached a point of no return. But silence or withdrawal could take us in a direction we may struggle to reverse, he said. He called on both leaders and citizens to remain actively engaged in protecting the countrys democratic space. Makinde added that he plans to engage with stakeholders across different sectors in the coming days to explore ways to strengthen democracy in Nigeria.  The post Nigeria drifting towards one-party state Governor Seyi Makinde raises concern over democracy appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
