Andre Onana has been branded an 'embarrassment' by fans online after Manchester United's defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield on Saturday.

The Red Devils lost 7-6 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bernardo Silva.

During the shootout, Onana could be seen attempting to put City players off.

Though he saved from Silva, the former Ajax and Inter Milan star conceded seven of the eight penalties he faced.

With United eventually crashing to defeat, Onana has come in for criticism on social media.

And many fans aren't happy with his actions, with one user saying: "Am I the only one, who thinks that Onana is a f***ing embarrassment for us?"

A second said: "He needs to realise who he’s playing for, there’s a lot of pressure on him and he just needs to focus not mess."

A third stated: "No agree completely! Terrible keeper and then he does stuff like this to make it worse."

Another opined: "Onana is not good enough for us imo. Would he be starting for City, Liverpool, Chelsea or Arsenal? I say no."

A fifth fumed: "His positioning for their goal massively contributed. He isn't a top 'Goalkeeper' in a classic fashion."

And a sixth said: "I do think what does he do? He makes me nervous."

Onana joined United from Inter Milan and struggled during his first season at Old Trafford.

He said before the Community Shield that he was set to take more 'risks' this season, as a goalkeeper that likes using his feet.

But there's still plenty of work to do before Onana becomes a United hero like the club's former No 1, David De Gea.

De Gea had expected to stay at United last year but, in the end, was cut loose with the veteran released as a free agent.

The Spain international has had a year out of football but recently joined Fiorentina, having finally agreed to accept a pay cut.

United boss Erik ten Hag, meanwhile, feels he has a 'very good team' at his disposal after the defeat to City.

Though their pursuit of Community Shield glory ended in failure, it was still an encouraging display.

And the 54-year-old reacted to the result by saying: "We worked and we had a competitive team. That is the responsibility for all of us.

"It is from players in the first place to be available and then for the staff to work with them, to support them, make them fit and keep them fit. When players are available we have a very good team."

He added: "We are going in the new season. I am very pleased with the new structure. We are working very good together.

"The team was always good but I think we can make steps forwards.

"I think from pre-season, and also today, we can take positives but I think if we step up and are more clinical in both boxes, then we can be a successful team."
