Colombia hippos rescue proposal by Anant Ambani offers humane relocation instead of culling invasive animals.

NEW DELHI: Colombia hippos rescue efforts have gained global attention after Anant Ambani formally urged Colombian authorities to reconsider plans to cull 80 hippopotamuses living in the Magdalena River basin.

In a letter addressed to the environment ministry, Ambani proposed relocating the animals to Vantara, his wildlife rescue and conservation centre in Gujarat. The facility has been positioned as a long-term, safe habitat for the hippos, with full financial, scientific and operational support offered for the relocation.

The Colombian government had approved lethal removal after classifying the animals as an invasive species. Officials cited concerns over biodiversity loss, ecosystem disruption and risks to public safety as key reasons behind the decision.

However, the Colombia hippos rescue proposal introduces an alternative approach focused on conservation rather than culling. Ambani emphasised that the animals are not responsible for their situation and called for a humane solution that prioritises welfare while addressing ecological concerns.

“These eighty hippos did not choose where they were born, nor did they create the circumstances they now face. They are living, sentient beings, and if we have the ability to save them through a safe and humane solution, we have a responsibility to try,” he said, urging authorities to consider relocation as a viable option.

Vantara has requested a temporary halt to the culling plan to allow time for a detailed evaluation of the proposal. The organisation has also expressed readiness to engage directly with Colombian officials to present a structured plan covering capture, transport and long-term care.

The Colombia hippos rescue case reflects a broader global challenge of managing invasive species while balancing environmental protection with ethical responsibility. The outcome could set a precedent for future wildlife management strategies.
