Abia Soccer Fest Advances to Second Phase, Focuses on Talent Development

The Abia Soccer Fest (ASF) has progressed to its second phase following the successful completion of the draws, announced Captain Eric Asomugha, Assistant Chairman of the Abia Sports Festival Committee. The grassroots football competition’s maiden phase witnessed impressive participation across the state, with 166 matches played across 17 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 184 wards.

Asomugha revealed that 3,312 players featured in the first phase, culminating in the emergence of LGA champions. The ASF aims to discover and develop young football talents, providing a critical platform for identifying promising players. The initiative targets players aged 18-23, offering training and exposure for professional careers.

The competition’s structure includes linking outstanding players with opportunities in the broader football industry, including potential business and career pathways. Asomugha commended Governor Dr. Alex Otti for his support, describing his leadership as instrumental to the initiative’s success.

The ASF Assistant Chairman lauded the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Sir Obilor Ananaba, and other stakeholders for their collaborative efforts. He appreciated grassroots stakeholders for their contributions to the competition’s smooth execution.

The Abia Soccer Fest is a strategic initiative aimed at revitalising grassroots football in the state while creating sustainable pathways for young talents to excel locally and internationally. With the second phase underway, the focus remains on talent development and empowering youths through sports.
