A letter from the Editor: A joyous announcement from Salt&Light and the Thirst Collective

You probably can’t tell from the outside, but something significant recently happened for Salt&Light and the rest of our parent company, the Thirst Collective.

We have been granted religious charity status by the Singapore authorities.

What does this mean for you, dear reader? Above all else, it gives you the comfort of accountability. “Charities, as community organisations working for public benefit, are accountable to the public and other stakeholders,” according to the Ministry of Culture, Community & Youth website.

Religious charities in Singapore are guided by a Code of Governance, developed by the Charity Council, set up to “boost public confidence in the charity sector by setting the standards of good governance for charities to aspire towards”.

One key difference it makes for us is that we are now able to conduct public fundraising.

As you see from the main image on this page, it takes a village to create content that edifies, encourages, equips and comforts. Each masthead within the Thirst Collective – consisting of Salt&Light, Thir.st, 还好吗 hhm.sg, Storiesofhope.sg and the Collective Studio team – is staffed by a team of editors, writers, videomakers, photographers, animators and illustrators.

We believe in giving God our best. For this reason, our staff hail from established media backgrounds, but have chosen to walk away from established careers and step into full-time faith ministry. (For example, to start the Thirst Collective, I had to leave Mediacorp, where I spent 12 years helming digital platforms such as todayonline.com and Channelnewsasia.com.)

Their sacrifice is voluntary and joyful, for the privilege of serving our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

If you have been blessed by the ministry of the Thirst Collective – reading articles that inspired you, watching videos that stirred you, consuming social media content that grabbed you – would you prayerfully consider partnering with us in the Gospel?

Here are 3 ways you can do so:

1. Join us at our annual fundraising gala dinner

This year’s fundraiser will be special – it will include the launch of the Salt&Light Inspiration Awards, which seek to honour the heroes of faith in our midst, and hopefully inspire more people to follow in their footsteps. Come, hear their stories, as well as the story behind the Thirst Collective – 9 years in the making, by God’s grace! BUY A DINNER TABLE HERE.

2. Make a recurring or one-time financial donation

Every dollar donated goes a long way to paving the way for this ministry, whether it’s the discipleship material from Salt&Light and Thir.st, or the evangelistic testimonies of 还好吗 hhm.sg and Storiesofhope.sg. Our faith goal for this year is to raise S$1 million in donations from individuals to cover the costs of our non-profit work. DONATE HERE.

3. Keep us in prayer

We believe we are at the frontlines of the spiritual battle – the war for hearts and minds being played out in the digital realm. We believe we are not contending alone, especially in the realm of prayer. Do keep us in prayer! Perhaps more than every dollar, every prayer counts!

Thank you all for considering the above. We are a collective – not just the staff, but we are part of One Church, the greater Kingdom of God. It is our pleasure and privilege to serve the King and His people, and we hope you’ll help us continue to minister as His Priests.

We’ll see you at the fundraiser!
