Four people have died following celebrations after Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador, with authorities reporting that three of the victims died from asphyxiation.

The incident occurred on June 30 as thousands of football fans gathered to celebrate the national team’s victory.

According to reports, the victims included two women, aged 48 and 19, and a 44-year-old man.

Emergency responders found the 19-year-old woman and the 44-year-old man unconscious at a street junction. Paramedics performed CPR before transporting them to a hospital, where both were later pronounced dead.

The 48-year-old woman was found unconscious on a nearby street in the Juárez neighbourhood. She was also taken to hospital but did not survive.

A fourth victim, believed to be a man in his 30s whose identity has not yet been released, later died after suffering cardiac arrest in hospital despite attempts by medical personnel to revive him.

Authorities said emergency services responded to numerous medical incidents during and after the celebrations.

According to Gasman, a total of 1,615 people received medical attention during the match and the celebrations that followed.

Of those, 28 people were taken to hospital with fractures, serious injuries, or other medical emergencies, including one case involving a heart attack.

Mexico City Security Secretary Pablo Vázquez said his department would support the ongoing investigation into the incident.

He said authorities would assist “the investigations being carried out by the competent authorities to determine exactly how these events occurred.”
