2027: Gregory University Picks APC’s Ikenna Ukwa for Honorary Doctorate

Gregory University, Uturu, Abia State, has selected Chief Ikenna Nicolas Ukwa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections, for an honorary doctorate degree in Communication and Media Studies.

The recognition was conveyed in a letter dated October 10, 2026, signed by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Celestina U. Njoku, on behalf of the institution’s Founder, Chancellor, Management and Senate.

According to the university, the decision to honour Ukwa followed an assessment of his contributions to human development, particularly in education, social development, economic empowerment, infrastructure and human capacity building.

The institution explained that its honorary doctorate awards are reserved for a select number of distinguished individuals within and outside Nigeria whose achievements and contributions to society have made significant impacts in their respective fields.

Gregory University said Ukwa’s development initiatives and contributions to communities in Abia State and beyond informed its decision to recognise him with the prestigious academic honour.

The university noted that the award was designed to acknowledge individuals whose activities and achievements have positively influenced their communities and contributed to broader national development.

The letter formally notifying Ukwa of his selection was presented to him by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of Administration, Professor Uwaoma Kalu Uche.

The honorary doctorate degree, Honoris Causa, is scheduled to be conferred on Ukwa on December 12, 2026, at a ceremony to be held at the university’s Goodluck Jonathan Auditorium in Uturu, Abia State.

Ukwa’s selection for the honour comes as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections, in which he is seeking election to represent Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives on the platform of the APC.

Beyond his political engagements, Ukwa has been associated with educational and community development initiatives through the Ikenna & Jenn Ukwa Foundation, which has undertaken programmes aimed at supporting human capital development and improving access to educational resources.

Among the foundation’s initiatives is its recently launched Back-to-School Programme, designed to provide educational materials to pupils and students across Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency.

The programme is aimed at supporting students and easing some of the financial pressures associated with acquiring essential learning materials, while encouraging educational participation among children and young people in the constituency.

The forthcoming conferment is expected to bring further attention to Ukwa’s involvement in community development and educational support initiatives as he pursues his political ambition ahead of the 2027 polls.
