The Super Eagles of Nigeria are expected to face Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s Gabon in a crucial World Cup qualifying play-off as they seek to secure a ticket to next year’s competition.

The Super Eagles had a rocky start to their qualification campaign, collecting just three points from their first four matches.

However, a late comeback, a four-game unbeaten streak capped by a 4-0 thrashing of Benin, earned them a play-off spot, while South Africa topped Group C to claim automatic qualification.

Gabon likely opponent for Nigeria

Nigeria now join Cameroon and DR Congo in the play-offs, but Gabon, who have never reached the World Cup, are seen as their most probable opponents.

Marseille striker Aubameyang remains Gabon’s key player. The former Chelsea, Arsenal, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona forward caused uncertainty about his play-off availability after receiving a red card in a dramatic 4-3 win over Gambia last week.

Aubameyang’s red card and suspension

Aubameyang scored all four goals for Gabon in that match, becoming only the seventh player to net four times in a single CAF World Cup qualifying fixture.

But his night ended sourly after he was dismissed in the 85th minute for two yellow-card offences, one for kicking and breaking the corner flag while celebrating, and another for shoving Alagie Saine.

The 36-year-old received a one-match suspension, which he has already served as Gabon defeated Burundi 2-0 in their final qualifier on Tuesday.

Striker set to inspire Gabon’s historic push

With his ban completed, Aubameyang is now eligible to feature against Nigeria in November’s play-offs.

Speaking after his four-goal haul against Gambia, the veteran forward reiterated his resolve to lead Gabon to their first-ever World Cup appearance.

“We want to go to the World Cup and, to get there, we have to win games,” he said. “I’m very motivated, and when you have the chance to go to the World Cup, you have to be even more motivated.

“I was effective, so I’m happy: four attempts, four goals. It was important for me to lead by example.”
