A former National Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mike Igini, on Thursday described the proposed 2026 Electoral Act as the worst in Nigeria’s history.

Igini said it was urgent to address what he termed the “tragedy” surrounding the Act ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that Nigerians may be denied the ability to determine their leaders if the current issues persist.

He made the remarks in Abuja during the second annual lecture of the Alumni Association of the National Institute for Security Studies.

Speaking on the theme, “Credible Elections and National Security in Nigeria,” Igini stressed that the country’s progress and overall quality of life would improve significantly if its electoral process is properly reformed.

He identified three key institutions as central to credible elections, INEC, the judiciary, and security agencies, emphasising the need to strengthen their roles and ensure proper coordination.
