2022: HERE ARE THE TOP 10 MOST POPULAR WEBSITES

Did you know that as of December 2022, the top 5 most visited websites are Google Search, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram?

As we begin the year 2023, let's take a look back at some of the biggest websites in the world, especially as the global world has become a global village.

Suffice it to say that the first website was created in August 1991 by Tim Berners-Lee at CERN, a European nuclear research agency. Berners-Lee's WorldWideWeb browser was made publicly available that month. The World Wide Web began to enter everyday use in 1993–4, when websites for the general public started to become available. Here are the top 10 biggest websites according to the number of visits:

1] GOOGLE: Google is the, by far, most visited website in the world. The search engine attracts around 90.1 billion visits per month on average. Google is the world’s largest and most used search engine, so this shouldn’t be surprising. The search engine has been online since 1997 and has indexed more than 150 trillion (yes, trillion) web pages to date. Google [dot] com is owned and operated by Alphabet, the parent company of Google, which was founded by the inventors of the Google search engine, Larry Page and Sergey Brin.

2] YOUTUBE: Youtube is the second most visited website in the world. The world’s by far most popular video hosting site gathers around 35 billion visits per average month. YouTube is hosting more than 5 billion videos to date with around 500 hours worth of videos being uploaded to the website every day on average. YouTube is online since 2005 and has been owned by Google / Alphabet since 2006. Alphabet, therefore, owns both of the two most popular websites in the world right now.

3] FACEBOOK: As the world’s most popular social media platform, Facebook finds itself at No. 3 in the ranking of the Top 10 most popular websites in the world. Facebook attracts an average of around 20.3 billion visits per month. The website has been online since 2004. It is owned and operated by Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook, Inc.), the corporation behind the platform, founded and led by Mark Zuckerberg.

4] TWITTER: Twitter is a microblogging social media platform that has grown extremely popular, particularly in recent years. The platform is not only used by private citizens but is also known to be the go-to social media platform for many world leaders around the world. While predominantly used as an app, the Twitter website now generates around 7 billion visits per month on average and is hence also one of the most popular websites on the internet.

5] INSTAGRAM: The Meta Platform’s secondary social media platform is also among the world’s most visited websites. Instagram is an image and video-based social media platform and is currently growing even much faster than Facebook itself. While mostly used as an App, Instagram’s website is also visited around 6.7 billion times each month, thus making Instagram also one of the most visited websites in the world.

6] BAIDU: Baidu [dot] com is the world’s most popular website that is not based in the United States. Baidu can be described as the “Chinese Google”. It generates an average of around 5.9 billion visits per month. The search engine website has been online since 2000. Although the founder of Baidu, Robin Li, had actually already invented the concept of a link-analyzing search engine as early as 1996 and therefore even before Google went online. In fact, Google’s search engine is partly based on Li’s concept. Li gave the internet his own version in 2000 and Baidu has dominated the Chinese search engine market ever since.

7] WIKIPEDIA: Wikipedia is also among the most popular websites in the world. The free online encyclopedia is able to attract around 5.3 billion visits worldwide per month on average. Wikipedia is currently also the only website in the Top 10 ranking of the most popular websites in the world that is owned by a non-profit organization, the San Francisco-based Wikimedia Foundation to be exact. Wikipedia has been online since 2001 and ever since truly changed the way the world searches and finds information about various topics.

8] YANDEX: Yandex is known as the “Russian Google” or, perhaps more accurately, the “Russian Yahoo” since it’s the most popular search engine on the Russian-speaking internet and its main news aggregator. Around 4.1 billion visits go to Yandex each month on average. While not very popular outside of Russian-speaking countries, Yandex still belongs to the most visited websites in the world.

9] YAHOO: Yahoo is known as one of the earliest groundbreakers of the Internet. Launched in 1995, it was one of the most popular sites on the first-generation mainstream internet. While not as popular as it once was, Yahoo, today a search engine and news aggregator, still finds itself among the most popular websites in the world with around 3.8 billion visits per month.

10] WHATSAPP: The world’s most popular messenger service app also represents one of the most popular websites in the world. The WhatsApp website, also owned by Meta Platforms, attracts approximately 3.2 billion visits every month.
