No fewer than 19 travellers died and 49 others sustained varying degrees of injuries after separate accidents in Kaduna and Ogun states.

In Kaduna, 13 persons died in a tragic accident that occurred at MRS Filling Station on Ahmadu Bello Way within Kaduna metropolis while 40 others sustained injuries.

The incident happened around 11pm on Friday when a trailer with a registration number STK 445 XA was travelling from Kano State, conveying onions and humans on top of the goods, lost control and crashed.

The Kaduna State Sector Commander, Kabir Y. Nadabo, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday, attributed the cause of the crash to overspeeding and overloading.

Nadabo was part of the team that conducted the rescue and prompt clearance of the obstruction caused by the accident.

He explained further that the injured were conveyed to Barau Dikko Specialist Hospital for further treatment.

He said the driver of the vehicle dumped the trailer and ran away, adding that efforts were ongoing to find the owners of the vehicle.

He promised that the corps would continue to work hard and liaise with transport stakeholders and the media in preaching safety.

In Ogun, at least six persons died while nine others sustained injuries in separate road crashes between Friday and Saturday.

On Friday, two persons died while one other sustained injuries in an accident at Iyana Odogo on Ilaro-Owode road.

The Spokesperson, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Florence Okpe noted that the accident occured at 6:00pm and involved a Mitsubishi car marked JJJ 854 JH and a truck with registration number T12224LA.

She explained that seven people, comprising four men and three women, were involved.

“One woman got injured while two men were killed from the crash. The suspected causes of the crash were obstruction and speed violation,” she said.

The FRSC spokesperson added that the injured victim and the deceased were taken to the General Hospital, Ilaro.

The Sector Commander, Anthony Uga, advised motorists to drive within the stipulated speed limit and always obey traffic rules and regulations.

On Saturday, four persons were confirmed dead in two separate accidents on Ijebu Ode-Ore road and Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Okpe stated that the first accident occured at Ogbere axis on Ijebu Ode-Ore road and involved a Daf truck marked AYE 886 ZQ and a Volvo truck with registration number MUS 246 YH.

She explained that the suspected causes of the crash were route and speed violation.

“A total of five men were involved, three injured while two others were killed. The injured victims were taken to the State General Hospital, Ijebu Ode.

“One of the corpses was handed over to the families of the deceased and the second one deposited at the General Hospital Morgue Ijebu Ode,” she said.

According to her, the second crash occured at 10:30 a.m on Saturday in Ogere axis after Verony on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway.

Okpe explained that the lone accident, which was caused by excessive speed and loss of control, involved a Toyota Camry marked BDG 526 JC.

She stated that the injured victims were taken to Idera Hospital, Sagamu for medical attention while the deceased were deposited at the hospital’s orgue.
