10th Senate Amends Rules, Moves to Sideline Uzodimma, Others from 11th Leadership

The Nigerian Senate has amended its Standing Orders in a move that significantly narrows the eligibility criteria for presiding and principal offices in the 11th National Assembly, scheduled to be inaugurated in June 2027.

The amendment, adopted on Tuesday after a closed-door session lasting about three hours, reviewed Orders 4 and 5 of the Senate rules, effectively restricting leadership contests to ranking lawmakers and excluding incoming senators without prior Senate experience.

The revised Order 4 stipulates that nominations for presiding officers must strictly follow a hierarchy based on legislative experience. The ranking prioritises former Senate Presidents, former Deputy Senate Presidents, former principal officers, and senators who have served at least one full term. It also includes former members of the House of Representatives, while first-time senators are only considered in the absence of all higher-ranking categories.

In a further tightening of the rules, the amended Order 5 provides that only lawmakers who served in the current 10th Senate will be eligible to contest for principal offices in the 11th Senate. This effectively bars newly elected senators in 2027 from vying for key leadership positions.

The decision is widely seen as a strategic move that could sideline several high-profile politicians expected to enter the Senate in 2027, including Governor Hope Uzodimma and other potential entrants.

Presiding offices in the Senate include the President of the Senate and Deputy President, while principal offices comprise the Majority Leader, Deputy Majority Leader, Chief Whip, Deputy Chief Whip, Minority Leader, Deputy Minority Leader, Minority Whip and Deputy Minority Whip.

The rule changes are expected to shape the power dynamics of the 11th Senate and may trigger political reactions ahead of the next general election cycle.
