Understanding the Roots of Muslim Hostility to Christianity(1)

By Moses Oludele Idowu

Few days ago a very disturbing post, very disgusting and in bad taste surfaced on Facebook. A fellow by the Facebook name of Yusuf Chamber made a post in which someone he called Jesus was in a kneeling position before him and he was supposed to be punishing him. The label on the person is “Jesus.” It was a revolting sight and very disturbing and provocative.

Would Muslims have gladly and peacefully look away if Mohammed, their warrior prophet, had been shown in auch a disgusting manner? I bet they would have passed a fatwa on the infidel.

Readers will remember in 2013 when that closet jihadist and loudmouth, Nasir El-Rufai released his equally disturbing and blasphemous tweet: “If Jesus criticizes Jonathan’s govt, Maku/Abati/Okupe will say he slept with Mary Magdalene.”
It was so bad that even his fellow Muslims felt offended and that he had gone too far.

But how far is too far to a jihadist and an utterly insensitive, unthinking brute, arrogant and ignorant, with no feelings for others; a man who turned a peaceful state to a killing field under 8 years?

Here.is a third case. In 2022 the Sterling Bank felt it was its turn, under that effete jihadist, know- nothing government of Muhammadu Buhari, to send her own insult and she did. On the Easter message to Nigeria and her customers it added:
“Like Agege bread, He rose”.

This was then followed with a bread divided into two halves. This was in reference to the Resurrection of Jesus and on the Holy Season of Easter. The allusion to Agege bread, of all things, and the mockery of the most symbolic element and doctrine in the entire Chrisirian salvation- history must not be missed.

I have cited three cases from responsible persons and Muslims who should know what they are doing. Several could be cited much worse than this on the internet everyday. Thus this could not be just a mistake because it appears to be a pattern.

The question then arises: what do Muslims dislike so much about Christ, His Message, Cross, History and even His Name that they feel duty bound to ridicule them? What do Muslims find so discomforting about Christ? Why do they find His Person, Message and Symbols so irritating? In one side of the mouth they claim Jesus is “one of their prophets”; and in another breath they make mockery of Him – .in this religion full of contradictions.

Is there “another Jesus”, a Muslim Jesus different from the Jesus of Nazareth, the Jesus of History?

The problem is much deeper than this. Often, we know a deeper truth through jokes and what seems a.mere slip of tongue or a consistent pattern of behavior, abuse or mockery of an object of Faith actually reveals a far greater tendency and deep-lying disease.

It is my purpose in this essay and the series that follow to unearth this “disease. It is my opinion and belief based on investigation as will soon be made clear that what Muslims do to CHRISTIANITY and especially to Christians wherever and whenever they are in dominion and their general attitude and hostile and bellicose tendencies to Christ and the object that symbolize Christ like the Cross is not accidental but motivated by a spirit, a particular kind of spirit.

Certain things are not natural for a human to do without some external psycho- spiritual tendencies, impetus, motivation and manipulation. A man doesn’t just wake up and start braking crosses, removing crucifixes, desecrating graves of certain people long buried, destroying emblems, burning Bibles, literature, churches… These are not natural things for people to do especially people who also claim to serve God. Someone has to be driven and motivated or pushed by a spirit. Not all actions are innocent, however simple they appear to be.

  *The Antichrist Spirit*

Some definition is necessary to provide a conceptual understanding to my readers who are not versed in theological jargons and terminologies. Who is an antichrist? What does the term “antichrist” mean?

It is a term derived from two Greek words : – ante and Christos.
The word “ante” in Greek does not connote opposition or antagonism as much as supposition. It means “in lieu of”. Christos on the other hand means “the anointed one, the messiah.” Thus an “antichrist” is anyone, any system, order, government, religion who by his or her actions attempts to oppose, deny, supplant, erase, the work, message, teaching, history of Christ. Anyone who offers himself as a substitute for Christ, as an alternative to Christ even if he is a general overseer of a church or a government official or a prophet of another religion is an antichrist basically and he is motivated by the Antichrist spirit.

Anyone who denies the works of Christ, His Vicarious works – Crucifixion, Atonement, Resurrection, Ascension etc, – is an antichrist and is motivated by the antichrist spirit.
There are antichrists and there is the Antichrist – a figure of such malevolent power and force, evil proportion and quality that will appear at the end of time of the world’s history. We should not confuse the two.

Antichrist is one figure that will appear at the last time but antichrists are many and already here; and in a small measure what the Antichrist is in a bigger form. Both are motivated by the same spirit – the Antichrist spirit and both reveal the same tendencies.

An antichrist is worse than even a satanist. A satanist directly opposes Christ openly and publicly as you see the Communists doing in old Soviet Union, China, North Korea etc; but the antichrist is different. He does not outrightly oppose Him but in disguise, subtility, deception and camouflage. And even sometimes openly and publicly if he has the support of the local population and the majority.

St. John more than anyone captures this. He knew Christ the most among all the Apostles and was the most beloved and he also gave to us the best description of who or what an antichrist should be. And how to recognize him.

Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the son.” ( 1 John 2:22)

Did you hear that? I didn’t write that. That has been written since around 75 or 80 AD long before Islam, Communism, Capitalism, Liberalism or any of the other isms now troubling the world as we know them. The essence of the antichrist spirit and antichrist person is denial of Christ. Pure and simple. Whoever denies Christ, His works, historicity, life, message etc., is an antichrist or motivated or driven by an antichrist spirit.

Let us now come back to Islam and Muslims generally which is what I am zeroing on in this investigation.

Islam denies Christ as Messiah.

Islam denies the Sonship of Christ and thus denies the God of the Bible as well who has affirmed His Sonship. [ Allah, the God of Islam has no son or sons, only slaves]

Islam denies the Crucifixion, which even the History of Rome as recorded by Roman historians like Cornelius Tacitus acknowledged and did not deny. [Thus we have a situation in which all eyewitnesses and leading historians of the era like Josephus, Philo, Tacitus attested to a fact but the same fact was denied by a book from another jurisdiction 600 years after the fact]

Because it denies the Crucifixion it must also deny the Resurrection, Ascension and Glorification of Christ or his Mediatorial session with the Father.

Islam denies the Bible as the authentic Word of God. The Koran plagiarizes it in many places, denies and actually denounces and upends in other places. In short it does not accept the Bible as the final revelation of the Word of God or its claims as fully inspired and superior. In short Islam does not accept the Bible is superior or final revelation or the authentic Word of God.

Islam denies the Cross – the most significant and symbolic object of Christianity and the greatest instrument in the annals of Chrisirian- Salvation history. There is nothing as hated to Muslims as the Cross. The destruction of the Cross and crosses and even graves marked with the cross is a common pastime of Muslims during jihads and when a city or region is being overrun by their mobs and jihadist gangs as history shows. Isn’t that strange? That someone should be so hard up and angry with a mere symbol that does not concern or hurt in anyway if not a motivation by a spirit – a malevolent spirit?

Why the Cross? Because the Cross represents something fundamental, something deep and symbolic and historical. It is the most important object of Faith encapsulating what Christianity stands for. That is why St. Paul declares: ” Far be it that I should glory save in the Cross of Jesus Christ by which the world is crucified to me and I to the world.” ( Galatians 6:14) The Cross is not just a symbol, it is the Christian’s glory and the Glory of his Faith and the symbol of his victory over death, sin, flesh and the world. To destroy or trample on that is not only an assault on my Faith it is an attack on the very core and interiority of my being.

Hatred of the Cross reveals a deeper dimension and evidence of deeper spiritual reality or disease. It reveals a spirit at work. And this spirit, we submit, is the antichrist spirit.
How?
Pay attention.
The very first thing the Jews and the Romans did after his Crucifixion of Christ was to secure the grave to avert His resurrection so that “the last error will not be worse than the first.” (Matthew 27:64)
Thus they admitted that the killing of Christ was a tragic error and thus they moved to avert the Resurrection.
And having been unsuccessful even to prevent that Resurrection they resorted to denial and intimidation and violence and persecution. This is the spirit that has been at work since the First Century and has manifested in empire, government, philosophy, a section of scholarship with one ultimate purpose: to deny the Historicity of Christ and his Crucifixion and even Resurrection. It began with the Jews and the Romans but it now operates in larger dimensions.
It is the same today but now this spirit is more pronounced in Islam than any other religion, movement or even philosophy today.

Conclusion
This is an introduction, more or less. In this first part I have tried to lay the charge and outline the case. In the subsequent series I will now provide several cases, incontrovertible proofs, evidences, textual attestations with dates, facts and figures from both recent or even ancient history and contemporary historical scholarship showing Islam has been largely motivated in her actions by this spirit.
