Do you know that stomach cancer can be associated with a loss of appetite, which is often considered a symptom of the disease? The stomach tumor’s presence may cause problems with the stomach’s natural digestive function, changing appetite and making eating more difficult. You might also have a chronic loss of appetite as stomach cancer advances, which could lead to inadvertent weight loss.

It’s important to keep in mind that a loss of appetite can also result from a number of different diseases or conditions. Even though stomach cancer is not always the cause of loss of appetite, people should get help if they also experience other troubling signs, including nausea, abdominal pain, or trouble swallowing.

Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, who is a consultant in surgical oncology at Manipal Hospital in Gurugram, exclusively told Jagran English about Is Loss of Appetite a Sign of Stomach Cancer? What are the signs and symptoms that can turn dangerous?

Dr. Sanjeev said, “While loss of appetite can be a symptom of various health conditions, including stomach cancer, it is important to note that it is not specific to stomach cancer alone. Many factors can contribute to a loss of appetite, such as stress, infections, medications, and other gastrointestinal issues. That being said, stomach cancer, also known as gastric cancer, may present with several signs and symptoms. It’s crucial to recognize that these symptoms are not exclusive to stomach cancer and can be associated with other, less severe conditions. However, persistent or worsening symptoms should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional.”

Signs And Symptoms Associated With Stomach Cancer:

1. Persistent Indigestion Or Heartburn: Chronic indigestion or heartburn that doesn’t respond to usual treatments may be a symptom.

2. Unexplained Weight Loss: Significant, unintentional weight loss without changes in diet or exercise can be concerning and should be evaluated.

3. Loss Of Appetite: While it’s a non-specific symptom, a persistent loss of appetite, especially when accompanied by other symptoms, should be addressed.

4. Abdominal Pain Or Discomfort: Pain or discomfort in the abdomen, particularly in the upper abdomen, may occur.

5. Nausea And Vomiting: Persistent nausea and vomiting, especially if there is blood in the vomit, should be evaluated promptly.

6. Feeling Full Quickly: A sensation of feeling full after eating small amounts of food may occur.

7. Bloody Stools: Blood in the stool or black, tarry stools may indicate bleeding in the digestive tract.

8. Fatigue: Generalized fatigue and weakness may be present.

At last, Dr. Sanjeev said, “It’s important to emphasize that these symptoms can also be caused by various other conditions, and having one or more of these symptoms does not necessarily mean someone has stomach cancer. However, if you or someone you know is experiencing persistent or worsening symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly for a thorough evaluation and diagnosis. Early detection and intervention can significantly improve outcomes for many health conditions, including cancer.”
