Kenya Airways Announces Resumption of Mayotte Flights 

Kenya Airways has announced the resumption of flights to Dzaoudzi (DZA) in Mayotte, marking a significant milestone in strengthening connectivity within the Indian Ocean region.

According to a statement from the National courier dated December 31, the move is expected to enhance trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between Kenya and the French overseas territory.

Mayotte is an island located between Madagascar and Mozambique. Flights to the island were temporarily suspended because of damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Chido to airport infrastructure. 

“Following the temporary suspension due to the significant damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Chido to airport infrastructure, we are ready to welcome our customers back.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this situation may have caused, and we want to assure you that your safety, along with that of our team, remains our highest priority,” the statement read in part.

Kenya Airways on Resumption of Comoros Flights

The airline had earlier resumed flights to Comoros on December 16, following the reopening of the airport in the region. However, operations to Mayotte remained suspended as Kenya Airways waited for the green flag on safety. 

Cyclone Chido, which developed in the Indian Ocean in early December, unleashed heavy rainfall, powerful winds, and massive waves across several countries, including Madagascar, Mayotte, Comoros, and northern Mozambique.

The storm led to widespread disruptions, including flight cancellations and government-issued warnings throughout the region.

Consequently, on December 14, Kenya Airways suspended flights to Comoros and Mayotte as a precautionary measure to prioritize the safety of passengers and staff.

Additionally, the storm’s effects extended inland, resulting in above-average rainfall in parts of Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, and northern South Africa.

“Tropical Cyclone Chido is expected to impact the islands of Comoros and Mayotte, along with other countries, starting today.

“Authorities in these regions have issued alerts, with the cyclone forecasted to persist until Monday, December 16, 2024,” the airline announced in an earlier statement.
