At just 26 years old, Ayale Williams has etched her name in history as the first lawyer in her family, passing the New York Bar Exam with exceptional grades. Her inspiring story is a testament to resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of her loved ones.

Breaking Barriers and Achieving Dreams

Ayale’s remarkable achievement was widely celebrated after a video of her mother’s emotional reaction to the news went viral. Posted on Instagram, the clip captures Ayale and her mother, Melrose Campbell, sitting tensely before a laptop as they await the exam results. The moment Ayale exclaims, “I passed!” is followed by her mother’s initial disbelief before she confirms the result herself and erupts into joyful screams.

The heartwarming scene was a reflection of years of hard work and sacrifice. Ayale is a graduate of North Carolina Central University School of Law, one of only six Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) accredited by the American Bar Association.

Overcoming Challenges

Ayale’s journey to success was far from easy. As a first-generation immigrant and now a first-generation lawyer, she endured a decade-long path of perseverance to achieve her dream. Reflecting on her milestone, she said:

“On May 3rd, I graduated from THEE North Carolina Central University School of Law with my Juris Doctor. After fighting for my life every day, I made it! By the grace of God and with my village cheering me on each step of the way, this achievement is not just for me but for my entire community.”

Her accomplishment extends beyond passing the bar. Ayale’s high score qualifies her to practice law in any jurisdiction that accepts the Uniform Bar Exam (UBE), a significant feat for a young lawyer.

Before embarking on her legal career, Ayale earned a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Criminal Justice from the University at Albany, New York. Her work experiences reflect her commitment to justice and community service. She has served in various roles, including as a Legal Fellow at POPLAW and an ABA-certified intern at her law school’s Family Law Clinic.

Even before earning her Juris Doctor, Ayale contributed as Majority Counsel at the New York State Assembly and worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, showcasing her dedication to making a difference in people’s lives.

A Legacy of Inspiration

For Ayale, this victory is deeply personal. She often credits her mother’s unwavering prayers and support for her success, as seen in her Instagram posts celebrating her accomplishments:

Her love for travel also played a role in keeping her grounded during her law school journey, with Ayale visiting 10 countries across four continents in the past three years.

Ayale currently serves as an Associate Attorney at Lundy Law Practice, LLC, and as a Legal Fellow at POPLAW. Her journey from being a determined student to becoming a practicing attorney highlights her resilience and commitment to excellence.
